He Doesn't Have a Porn Problem

He doesn't have a porn problem. He doesn't have a phone problem. He doesn't have a working-late problem. He doesn't have a third-beer problem. He doesn't have a staying-up-too-late problem.

He has a problem with the twenty minutes between getting in bed and falling asleep.

That's the window. The kids are down. The house is quiet. The TV's off. For the first time all day there's nothing left to manage, nothing to fix, nobody to perform for. Just him, the dark, and the woman six inches away who feels like she's six hundred miles away.

The marriage goes quiet. The truth gets loud. And he'll do almost anything to not be awake for it.

So he reaches for the phone.

Porn isn't the problem. I'll say it again, because every guy reading this wants me to be wrong. The porn is the anesthetic. The marriage is the surgery he keeps postponing.

He's not even that into it half the time. He's not chasing the woman on the screen. He's chasing ten minutes where his nervous system finally shuts up. Ten minutes where he doesn't have to feel the thing sitting on his chest since year three. The dead bedroom. The roommate energy. The way she says "we're working on it" in couples therapy and then rolls away from him at 11pm. The quiet math he does in the dark about how many years he's got left like this.

That's what the phone is for. It isn't lust. It's morphine.

So he white-knuckles it. Deletes the apps. Installs the blocker. Tells his accountability buddy. Makes it to day nine feeling like a hero.

Then Friday comes. A fight about nothing. She rolls away again. By midnight he's found a new exit. Maybe it's the porn again. Maybe it's the bourbon. Maybe it's two hours of fantasy football he doesn't care about, or the pretty coworker he thinks a little too much about on the drive home.

Kill the painkiller without treating what hurts and he finds a new one by Friday. Every time. That's not weakness, brother. That's a man who never learned there was an option for pain besides numbing it.

So let's name what's actually on the table during those twenty minutes. Four things, and he's been holding all four with one hand while he reaches for the phone with the other:

  • He married someone who checked out years ago, and he's been working overtime to not notice.
  • He's terrified that if he stops being the "easy" one, she leaves, and he loses half his time with his kids.
  • He's never once said out loud, to another man, "I think my marriage is dead and I don't know what I did wrong."
  • He's carrying a loneliness that has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with not being known by anyone, including himself.

That's heavy. Of course he reaches for the phone. Anybody would reach for something.

Treating the wound doesn't start with the porn. It starts with being awake for the twenty minutes. The work starts tonight, like this:

  1. When you get in bed, leave the phone on the dresser. Don't fix anything. Don't fall asleep on purpose. Just stay.
  2. Name the loudest thing. Out loud, or on the notes app, or on a scrap of paper. Not "I'm stressed." The real one. "I think she's done with me." "I haven't been touched in fourteen months." "I don't know who I am outside this house."
  3. Notice the pull to numb it. That pull is a map. It points straight at the thing you've spent years not looking at.
  4. The next morning, tell one man. Not your wife. Not your therapist yet. One guy who won't flinch and won't fix it.
  5. Do it again the next night.

That's not a porn blocker. That's the surgery. It's slower, it hurts more, and it's the only thing I've ever watched actually work.

It usually fails when a guy tries it solo. The reason is simple. He's got a wife who feels like a stranger, a couple of work friends he talks playoffs with, and not one man he can say the true thing to. So the only thing awake at midnight with him is the phone.

That's the whole game. A man will white-knuckle porn for nine days. He will not white-knuckle his own loneliness forever. He doesn't need more discipline. He needs other men in the room who've been exactly where he is and didn't die in there.

Tonight, get in bed and leave the phone on the dresser. Stay awake for the twenty minutes. Find out what's actually been waiting for you in the dark. It's the bravest thing you'll do all week, and it's the first thing that's pointed in the right direction.

P.S. If you read this and felt seen, that was the point, and you shouldn't do the next part alone. The HFM Brotherhood is hundreds of guys who put the phone down and started doing the actual work, together. DM me if you want to take it for a free test drive.
